Yesterday (2023-07-12) around 19:50 UTC:
During server maintenance that ordinarily should not cause problems, the VM running VikingMUD froze completely and needed a reset. The MUD was back up at 19:56 UTC. Sorry for the problem!
The MUD is back up. Some system services are not yet ready, I will look into those tomorrow.
This is a completely new VM (but on the same hardware), and I am working to import the configuration from the old VM so that we can be back up as soon as possible.
Things did not work out as planned, due to severe problems with the boot area of the virtual machine. Several hours of work remain.
During today's regular reboot, I'll reboot the server as well. Please allow for some additional minutes of downtime.
The board of the VikingMUD organization has announced the annual members' meeting.
The move appears to have worked well. Thanks to Cryzeck for donating new server hardware!
Today, we'll move VikingMUD to a new server.
This requires a longer downtime than usual, approximately 45-60 minutes.
The MUD will be shut down at 10:30 UTC (11:30 CET), and back up again between 11:15 and 11:30 UTC (12:15 and 12:30 CET) unless there are unforeseen problems.
We had a short-notice reboot today to see if a newer Linux kernel might fix some in-MUD performance and lag issues. The MUD was down for longer than expected, from 12:45 UTC until 13:13 UTC.
The reboot went fine and the MUD was quickly back up again, although with some in-MUD lag that clever people are investigating.
The server will reboot for security upgrades during regular MUD reboot today. This adds 3-20 minutes downtime, the MUD is expected back up between 08:35 and 08:55 UTC.
